Can I Freeze Avocado?

avocado-933060_640If you’ve ever bought a bunch of avocados, you know that they ironically ripen about the same time.

Then what do you do with all these ripe avocados?

Well, you could start adding it to everything, or you can freeze some and save it for later. While fresh avocados are always going to be preferred, avocados can be frozen. Here is how.

Freezing Your Ripe Avocados

Though not as versatile as whole avocados, pureed avocados freeze best. Follow these steps.

  • Step 1. Start by thoroughly washing your unpeeled avocados.
  • Step 2. Cut, peel and pick your avocados. If you are unsure how to properly do this step, follow the instructions here.
  • Step 3. Take the flesh of your fruit and place it into your blender or food processor. To keep your puree from browning, you should add one tablespoon of an acidic ingredient such as lemon juice for each avocado. Puree the avocado and the acid together until you have a creamy consistency. You could choose to mash your avocado instead of pureeing, but keep in mind that you may not spread the acid around evenly, resulting in an undesirable puree.
  • Step 4. Package your puree in an air-tight container or a freezer bag. If you are using a container, leave about 1/2 to 1 inch space at the top to leave room for expansion. If you are using a freezer bag, get as much of the air out as possible. Then freeze.

What You Need to Know

  • Pureeing and freezing ripe avocado isn’t difficult at all. But there are some things you should remember.
  • Use your frozen avocado within four to five months of placing it in the freezer.
  • You can freeze it in halves instead of pureeing, simply place cut your avocado in half and place it in a container or bag. However, avocados frozen in their whole state will not keep the same texture or taste when it thaws. This likely won’t be a good option if you are hoping to eat them as slices later on. You can freeze your avocado this way and purée it later to make guacamole, a spread or even add the frozen pieces to a smoothie.
  • Don’t freeze guacamole. Pureed avocado freezes well, prepared guacamole with other ingredients may not. This is especially true if you like your guacamole chunky, or add in ingredients that don’t freeze well on their own.

If you’ve ever had an abundance of ripe avocados, you know how hard it can be to use them all up before they go bad. Store the fruit for later by pureeing them and freezing, letting you keep them up to five months more.
