Thinking of throwing your own party? Here some easy Cinco de Mayo party ideas.

Decorations

The colors Mexican flag. Adorning your party area the flag of Mexico is an instant way to add color and get into the mood. If you don’t wish to display the actual flag, you can go with other red, white and green decorations, such as streamers and balloons.

 

Cactuses. What better plant to go with your Mexican-themed party than a cactus? Use a small potted cactus as the centerpieces for your tables. You can even let your guests take them home.

Maracas and sombreros. Other décor synonymous with Mexican culture? Maracas and sombreros of course! Hand out both to your guests or just use them to decorate tables.

Music

Mariachi music. Mariachi music can help turn a casual get together into an all-out fiesta!  Characterized by the melodious sounds of trumpets, guitar, violins and bass, it is considered  a traditional Mexican sound. There are also pop, country and other styles of Mexican music. Choose what suits you and your guests’ tastes the most.

Food and Drink

Guacamole. Chop up some ripe avocado, garlic, red onion, and tomatoes for a chunky guacamole. If making it ahead of time, use lime juice to keep it fresh and store in the refrigerator. This makes an excellent side dish to tacos, quesadillas and other food.

Taco dip. Full of flavor and easy to make, taco dip is always a party favorite. Layer ground meat cooked with taco spices, refried beans, avocado, cheese, onions and tomatoes. Serve with fresh tortilla chips.

Tacos. Another Mexican-themed party favorite. Make them with hard or soft shells; with ground beef, steak, chicken or fish. You can set up a taco bar and let guests build their own.

Margaritas. A classic margarita is made with frozen lime concentrate or margarita mix, tequila, Cointreau and salt for the glass. Give your margaritas a little twist by using champagne or flavored liqueur instead of Cointreau.

Non-alcoholic drinks. For a festive non-alcoholic drink, mix frozen lime concentrate with lemon-lime soda or sparkling cider. You may also want to make refreshing smoothies with blueberries, raspberries and peaches.

May 5th commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France. It is largely celebrated with fun music and delicious food and drinks. Use these ideas for planning your own Cinco de Mayo party.
