How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

ID-100298583The start of a new year often brings change, with many people vowing to make some sort of resolution. Unfortunately, that can often go south quickly. While many people start the year off strong, many people quickly forget about their resolutions. Whether you want to lose weight, save money, quit smoking or even eat more healthy fats like avocado, here are some easy ways to help you keep your New Year’s resolutions this year.

Make it realistic. Let’s be honest. Are your goals realistic? Making unrealistic resolutions are probably the number one way to fail. Instead of vowing to never eat fast food again, make a promise to yourself to start eating more veggies. Start small and make your goals easily attainable. If your goals are a little out of reach, consider scaling them back while there’s still plenty of time in the year to achieve them.

Make plans. How are you going achieve your goals? What steps are you going to take to make sure you keep your resolution? How will you deal with temptation to eat off limit foods or skip that exercise class? Come up with a sure fire plan that includes the steps you’re going to take, but also what you will do when you feel that temptation. Without a set plan, you are more likely to fail.

Write a list of reasons. Writing out the reasons for making your resolution will help you see just why you’re doing it and will keep your motivation strong. Visit your list frequently, even daily if you need to. Throughout the year your reasons for making your resolutions may change and you may want to revise the list.

Tell your friends and family about your resolution. Tell others about your goals so that they can be there to support you. It is much easier to keep a resolution when your friends and family are there to support your decisions and your actions.

Give yourself a reward. If you are trying to lose weight, you shouldn’t give yourself a food reward. Nor should you allow yourself to go on a shopping spree if your resolution is to quit the money. However, small rewards can be a great motivation and will help keep you on track.

Keep chugging along. Remember, an occasional slip does not you won’t achieve your goal or that you need to give up on your resolution. Do your best, take each day at a time and keep on trying.

Each year, many people make New Year’s resolution. Unfortunately, most of them will forget about them shortly after. Use these easy-to-follow tactics to help you keep your resolutions this year.
