Out-of-the-Ordinary Foods to Throw on the Grill

grillingThere’s still lots of summer left so lets’ take advantage of grilling season!

Everyone throws their steak, hot dogs and burgers on the grill, but did you know there are many more foods you can grill too? Using your grill to cook these foods will change up the taste just enough to make you fall in love with them all over again.

Lettuce. You may have thrown some corn, potatoes or even bell peppers on your grill, but it’s time to give lettuce a try. Pick a type with large, sturdy leaves like romaine, and get some nice grill marks on them. Alternatively, you can cut a head of lettuce in half and grill it that way.

Avocado. Drilling just makes everything taste better, even your avocados. Simply cut your fruit in half, remove the seed and coat the flesh with a little olive oil. With the skin still on, place the cut side on your grill for about 5 minutes. You can eat it alone or spoon in some salsa and sour cream.

Bacon. Bacon just makes everything better, but it can turn into a greasy mess. Cooking bacon on the grill gives your meat a smoky flavor, and won’t leave them soaking in their own fat.

Bread. Grilled bread is like having a nice piece of garlic bread, just amped up. Using a crusty loaf, brush your slices with olive oil or butter. Rub it with a roasted garlic to really give it that garlic bread taste. Grill the slice for a few minutes on each side, until it gets some nice grill marks. Add some shaved parmesan if you wish.

Pizza. Pizza dough cooked on the grill is nothing like pizza cooked in a traditional oven inside a pizza pan. This is much better. Get some premade pizza dough (or make your own!), flatten it out and lightly brush it with some olive oil. Place it on the grill and leave it long enough for grill marks to appear. Remove it from the heat and add your toppings with the grilled side up. Place it back on the grill for a few more minutes until the cheese is melted.

Tofu. Vegetarians can get their protein pecks at the barbecue too! Start by pressing your tofu to drain the excess water out. Next, cut your tofu into ½ inch thick slices and lay it on the grill. Cook each side for just a few minutes until it heats up and gets a few grill marks on them.

Quesadillas. Cooking quesadillas on the grill is much like cooking them in your pan, just better! Fill them with whatever you desire and place them on the grill while they are still open. Once the cheese starts to melt, fold one side over to seal it and remove from the heat.

Your grill is perfect for cooking so much more than just meat. During your next barbeque, give any of these out-of-the-ordinary foods a try.
